The Cleveland Monsters fell to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (44-16-7-2) 4-1 on Saturday evening at Mohegan Arena. With the loss, the Monsters are now 35-26-6-2 and are currently in third place in the AHL’s North Division standings.
The Penguins’ Atley Calvert scored the only goal of the opening frame at 12:29 to give Wilkes-Barre/Scranton the 1-0 lead through 20 minutes. Following a scoreless second period, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton’s Aidan McDonough notched one at 12:10 of the third to extend the Penguins’ lead, but Cleveland’s James Malatesta responded with a goal of his own at 13:02 assisted by Hudson Fasching and Hunter McKown to make it a 2-1 game. McDonough recorded his second of the night at 14:00 while on the power play and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton’s Tanner Howe found the empty net at 19:48 to make the final score 4-1 Penguins.
Cleveland’s Zach Sawchenko stopped 24 shots in defeat while Wilkes-Barre/Scranton’s Joel Blomqvist made 25 saves for the win.
