IT'S A BIRD... IT'S A PLANE... IT'S THE CLEVELAND MONSTERS

Dec 02, 2025
Written By: Samantha Barlow

As true comic fans know, Superman’s home planet is Krypton. However, what many may not know is that the Man of Steel originally hails from this little city known as Cleveland.

Creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster brought this comic book hero to life in the early 1930’s, right here in Cleveland, OH. Superman would make his first appearance in the Detective Comics (DC) Universe in 1938 and would later become known as the first American superhero.

Siegel and Shuster met in 1931 at Cleveland’s Glenville High School where they became fast friends. From there, they combined Siegel’s writing prowess and Shuster’s artistic magic to create the very first designs of Superman.

Design inspiration for the comic came from several sources close to home. Superman was inspired by Siegel himself, with Shuster using certain poses and mannerisms to bring this character to life. Additionally, Superman’s alter ego, Clark Kent, spends his days as a reporter as a nod to Siegel’s childhood dream of becoming one himself. Siegel’s wife, Joanne, would become the early influence for Superman’s love interest, the enigmatic reporter Lois Lane.

Most notably, though, was the influence of Cleveland-area events, several of which would become the foundation of the storylines seen in the early Superman comics.

With the comics’ roots being tied so tightly to Cleveland, it only made sense to bring an on-screen adaptation back to the place where it all began. Two summers ago, James Gunn did just that when he brought Superman home to Cleveland, making the city the backdrop to the movie released in July of 2025.

As a celebration of this homecoming, the Cleveland Monsters will invite this action hero into their barn for their first ever Superman Night, happening on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, at 6:30 pm.

The Monsters will wear Clark Kent warmup jerseys as they gear up to face off against the villain in this story, the Toronto Marlies. However, once the puck drops, the disguises come off, and the true heroes will come out as the team will don Superman jerseys for game play.

For one night only, fans will get to immerse themselves in the usual Monsters hockey action but with a superhero twist. Fans should be prepared to bring all their energy to this weeknight game where they can expect plenty of Superman activations to participate in throughout the evening.

Adding to the excitement of the night, the Siegel and Shuster Society will be in attendance at the game, giving fans a chance to learn more about the history of Superman and how the organization is keeping the legacy of Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster alive.

This night will also offer a Superman Cape giveaway presented by GE Lighting, a Savant Company to the first 2,500 kids ages 14 & under, allowing kids at the game to get in on the action and be geared up alongside the team.
