Prehistoric Power Meets Hockey In Monsters Fossil Faceoff Saturday

Dec 10, 2024

The Cleveland Monsters will host the Lehigh Valley Phantoms for Fossil Faceoff presented by Cleveland Museum of Natural History on Saturday, December 14, at 7:30 p.m. at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse. The night marks an exciting partnership with the museum that will give the fans a chance to hear about the original monster of our region: Dunkleosteus terrelli. The giant predator roamed the ancient sea that covered Ohio roughly 359 million years ago.

Dunkleosteus will be featured on the Monsters specialty jerseys for the night along with the depths of the water and a variety of fossils in the sand. The prehistoric jerseys will be auctioned off to benefit the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. Fans wishing to participate in the auction can do so via DASH or in a special live jersey auction postgame from Section 105 featuring select player jerseys. Auction details can be found at clevelandmonsters.com/jersey.

“We are excited to be able to partner with the Cleveland Museum of Natural History and pay tribute to the monsters that came before us,” said Monsters President Mike Ostrowski. “It gives us the chance to share our spotlight with Dunkleosteus and continue to learn more about the rich history we have here in our own community.”

The game will include a new look for the night to match the appearance on the ice as soon as the fans enter Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse through the Power Portal on the Street Level. Further along the concourse, the museum will be on hand with activities for fans to interact with. A special Dig to Win contest will be available for fans to play through the Monsters Mobile App presented by University Hospitals for themed prizes. The Cleveland Museum of Natural History’s President and CEO Sonia Winner will join the team for a VIP puck drop ahead of the night.

“We’re thrilled to join the Cleveland Monsters for this exciting partnership,” says Winner. “Because of the Museum's vast Ohio-based collection, which includes Dunkleosteus and many other incredible specimens, Ohio’s natural history is a story we are uniquely able to tell. This partnership will allow us to connect even more of our community with the amazing history of our region.”

Special Humongotron videos will be played throughout Saturday night featuring Monsters players Jake Gaudet, Justin Pearson and Zach Sawchenko touring the Cleveland Museum of Natural History attempting to pronounce fossils the public will see when visiting. Additionally, Monsters mascot Sully will share his journey touring the museum learning about the animals that call it home. Fans can stop by Center Ice, The Official Team Shop of the Cleveland Monsters, for the Fossil Collection consisting of a replica jersey, headware, shirts, hoodies and novelties both in store and online at MonstersTeamShop.com.
