Cleveland Comes Back To Notch 5-4 Overtime Win Over Syracuse

The Cleveland Monsters beat the Syracuse Crunch 5-4 in overtime on Friday night at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse. A season-high 14,567 fans in attendance saw the win which brought the Monsters to 15-6-0-1 and first place in the AHL’s North Division standings.

 

Syracuse scored the first two of the contest with late first period goals from Steven Santini at 17:39 and Dylan Duke at 18:53. Cleveland’s Joseph LaBate was able to beat the buzzer with a power-play goal off feeds from Stanislav Svozil and James Malatesta to make it 2-1 Syracuse at the first break. The Crunch added to their lead 56 seconds into the second frame with a goal from Gabriel Szturc but was followed by another power-play goal for the Monsters from James Malatesta with LaBate and Luca Del Bel Belluz on the helpers to make it a 3-2 deficit for Cleveland through 40 minutes. Szturc scored again 10:20 into the final frame to make it a 4-2 lead for the Crunch. Del Bel Belluz scored twice in the final moments of the game at 17:49 with Svozil and Daemon Hunt on the assists and 18:55 to tie the game at four and force overtime. Grabbing assists on the tying goal was Hunt and LaBate. Corson Ceulemans tallied the game winning goal 2:36 into the overtime period with Owen Sillinger and Malatesta notching assists for the 5-4 overtime win for Cleveland.

 

Cleveland’s Jet Greaves made 16 saves for the win while Syracuse’s Matt Tomkins stopped 28 shots in defeat.
