Equipment Guide

Equipment is an essential part of hockey to ensure safety, especially at higher levels. During beginning stages of play, most Learn to Play programs offer equipment for rental or a reduced cost for purchase.


The following equipment is typically required for hockey players:

  • Hockey Skates
  • Shin Guards
  • Hockey Pants
  • Girdle/Cup protector (recommended)
  • Mouth Guard 
  • Shoulder Pads
  • Elbow Pads
  • Hockey Gloves
  • Helmet
  • Hockey Stick

Where to Buy Equipment

It is recommended for new players to buy equipment in person to make sure the sizing and style is correct. Most ice rinks have a Pro Shop on site with available equipment, skate sharpening, and personal assistance. 

Some online stores such as Hockey Monkey and Total Hockey offer brand new equipment at a discounted price.
