Eastern Conference Preview: Wilkes-Barre/Scranton
Perhaps the most anticipated match-up of the upcoming 2018-19 season is when the Monsters take on the Pittsburgh Penguins’ AHL affiliate, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. Led by Head Coach Clark Donatelli, the Baby Pens finished the 2017-18 regular season with a 45-22-6-3 record and clinched a spot in the Calder Cup Playoffs for the 16th season in a row. The Penguins season ended however, in the first round when they fell to the Charlotte Checkers in three games.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton will make two trips to Quicken Loans Arena, while the Monsters make two stops of their own to the Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza. The last time these two teams played was on February 11th, 2009, where the Monsters dropped a 3-1 contest on the road to the Penguins.
When Cleveland meets Wilkes-Barre/Scranton this season, there potentially could be a familiar face on the ice as former Monsters standout defenseman Stefan Elliott signed a one-year, two-way deal with the Pittsburgh Penguins at the start of free agency.
