Cleveland Celebrates AHL's 75th Season

The AHL is celebrating its 75th year of hockey this season, and as one of the league’s charter cities, Cleveland is a proud part of the celebration. The city is rich in AHL tradition, dating back to the original Cleveland Barons, who captured nine Calder Cups between 1938 and 1964.

Recently, Lake Erie broadcaster Ben Holden had a chance to sit down with some of the men who were a part of those great Barons teams. Bill Needham, a former Barons captain and steady defenseman, was one of those men. Holden also talked with Wayne Muloin, who spent time with the Barons and then the Cleveland Crusaders of the WHA. Mulion was a standout defenseman who was known for his “hip checks”.

Phil Simon, who has 60 years of hockey service here in Cleveland as an equipment manager and locker room assistant, was the another man Holden interviewed for two features that were recently produced for one of Lake Erie’s television broadcasts.
