Monsters Battle Back for Thrilling Win in Rockford

ROCKFORD, IL – The AHL’s defending Calder Cup Champions, the Cleveland Monsters, proudly powered by Constellation, defeated the Rockford IceHogs on Wednesday at the BMO Harris Bank Center in Rockford, IL by a final score of 5-4. With the win, the Monsters improved to 6-8-1-1 overall this season and with a .438 points percentage, currently remain alone in eighth place in the AHL’s Central Division standings.

Rockford’s Chris DeSousa staked the IceHogs to a 1-0 lead with an even-strength goal at 9:23 of the first period before a T.J. Tynan power-play goal, assisted by Sonny Milano and Daniel Zaar at 1:27 of the second, tied the game at one apiece. DeSousa struck again at even-strength at 5:26 of the second before back-to-back even strength Joe Pendenza tallies, both assisted by Milano and Oliver Bjorkstrand, at 13:44 and 16:51 of the second respectively, provided Cleveland with their first lead of the game at 3-2.

Rockford scratched back in front by a 4-3 margin thanks to a Cameron Schilling even-strength marker at 19:18 of the second and a five-on-five Victor Svedberg blast at 1:31 of the third, but Cleveland netted two unanswered scores down the stretch, from Milano on the power-play at 5:07 assisted by Dean Kukan and Zaar, and Zaar on the power-play at 15:31 thanks to feeds from Alex Broadhurst and Kukan, to claim a 5-4 victory. In Wednesday’s win, the Monsters set a new single-game high with three power-play goals and killed off each of the six penalties they faced.

Monsters net-minder Joonas Korpisalo improved to 1-2-1 in net for Cleveland by virtue of a 34-save performance while Lars Johansson stopped 23 of the 28 Monsters pucks he faced in defeat.
